Not necessarily. Many sole traders with simple finances manage using accounting software. However, if you run a limited company, employ staff, or are VAT registered, an accountant can save time, reduce compliance risk, and help you keep more of your profits.
Yes. Many sole traders and freelancers with straightforward finances can successfully complete their own Self Assessment using HMRC’s online system. If your income comes from a single self-employed business and your records are simple, filing it yourself is often perfectly reasonable.
This depends entirely on your situation. For new founders running small operations, FreeAgent tends to be fine. Xero and QuickBooks are modern highly compatible solutions, whereas Sage is more traditional.
